NBC wants AIT to be like NTA – Oby Ezekwesili

Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has joined other Nigerians to condemn the suspension of the broadcasting licence of AIT and Ray Power FM stations by the National Broadcasting Commission NBC. NBC yesterday June 6th, suspended the license of DAAR communications, owners of AIT and Raypower, on grounds that the media house failed to abide by the ethics of broadcasting. Reacting to the revocation, Ezekwesili in a tweet she posted, said the NBC wants AIT to carry out its functions like the state-owned NTA where all the programmes are devoid of criticism for the government in power.  “My Summary of this lengthy Sanctions letter from NBC to AIT is simply this: ‘We have warned you several times in the past to stop broadcasting things that upset the Government and NBC. The National Broadcasting Commission on Thursday announced the suspension of the licences of the African Independent Television and Ray Power FM belonging to the Daar Communications Limited. The NBC Director-General, Dr Modibbo Kawu, stated this at a press briefing in Abuja, saying the shutdown of the media houses was until further notice. The DG said the infractions committed by the media houses included their inability to pay their licence renewal fees and the airing of a Presidential election documentary while the matter was still before a tribunal, among others. President Buhari dissolves eighth NASS, issues proclamation for ninth Assembly

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday pronounced the dissolution of the eighth session of the National Assembly and announced the proclamation of the ninth session of the federal parliament billed to commence on Tuesday, June 11th. The Clerk to the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani Omolori, confirmed this while addressing journalists in his office on Thursday. He said, “I want to confirm that I have received proclamation from the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “The first is on the dissolution of the eight National Assembly, while the other one is on the convening of the first session of the ninth National Assembly. “The proclamation of the dissolution of the eight National Assembly takes effect from 12 midnight of 8th June. “By implication, from 8th of June by 12 midnight, the eight National Assembly stands dissolved. “Similarly, the Ninth National Assembly will be inaugurated and first sitting will be held on Tuesday 11th of June by 10:00

FG revokes oil mining licence of five companies

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has revoked the oil mining licences (OML) and one oil prospecting licence (OPL) belonging to five companies. A statement released by the agecy today Thursday June 6th, says the revocation was based on a presidential directive to “recover legacy debts” owed by the companies operating the licences. According to the statement, the five companies affected are Summit Oil International (OPL 206), Express Petroleum and Gas Company (OML 108), Cavendish Petroleum Nigeria (OML 110), Pan Ocean Oil Corporation (OML 98) and Allied Energy Resources Nigeria, (OML 120 and 121).

CAF President Ahmad Ahmad arrested in France

The president of the Confederation of African Football, Ahmad Ahmad was arrested today at the Berri Hotel in Paris, France.  He was said to be in France to attend the FIFA Congress. Jeune Afrique made the announcement and specified that Ahmad will be heard by the services of the Central Office of the fight against corruption and financial and fiscal offenses (Oclif).  The arrest according to the report is linked to the contract unilaterally broken by CAF with the German equipment manufacturer Puma to engage with the company Technical Steel, based in La Seyne-sur-Mer. He had defended himself last April and gave the assurance that all decisions were transparent. Details to emerge later

The Rio de Janeiro's cybercrime police division has requested the presence of Neymar to testify about an Instagram video he shared showing explicit WhatsApp messages and photos he allegedly received from a woman who has accused him of raping her in a Paris hotel. The woman told Sao Paulo police on Friday that Neymar raped her on May 15 at 8.20pm at the Sofitel Paris Arc De Triomphe hotel. Investigator Paulo Sartori of Rio's cybercrime police division said that two of his agents visited Brazil's training ground on Monday, where the team is preparing for the Copa America. The Ondo state police command have arrested two security guards for killing their boss, 71 year old Kwakye Kwaku Richards, a Ghanaian, and his 27-year-old daughter, Kwakyw Tope, at his residence at Ojomo Akintan Estate on Ilesha/Owo expressway in Ondo State. Parading the suspect before newsmen, the state Commissioner of Police, Undie Adie, said the suspects, Ayuba Idris, and Taisu Abubakar, both aged 20, were initially declared wanted by the police for killing the victims and were arrested in Kano and Sokoto states, respectively. The suspects who are of Hausa and Fulani extractions, confessed that they killed their boss and daughter and dumped their corpse in a building in their estate. Eke, allegedly defrauded his victims through an alleged ponzi scheme by inducing his victims to invest in his Swissgolden packages, through his company, Micheno Multi-purpose Cooperative Society, under the false pretence of paying them 80 per cent return on investment within just 40 days. Former Arsenal and Spain footballer, Jose Antonio Reyes, who died in a car crash on Saturday June 1st has been laid to rest this morning in his hometown Utrera, Seville. The 35-year-old was killed along with his 23-year-old cousin and another man when the vehicle they were travelling in overturned and burst into flames in Utrera, Seville.    According to Spanish media, he was reportedly on his way home to his wife and three children after training. His cousin Jonathan Reyes, 23, a back seat passenger, also died along with a third man called Juan Manuel Calderon who managed to get out of the vehicle but suffered first degree burns to 60 per cent of his body that ended up claiming his life after he was rushed to Virgen del Rocio hospital in Seville. Spanish police said they believe Reyes was driving his Mercedes Brabus S550V at 120 miles per hour - some 50mph over the speed limit on the A-376 motorway near Alcala de Guadaira, outside Seville.
