The Bauchi state police command have arrested a Nasarawa-based businessman, Abdullahi Mohammed, for allegedly planning his own kidnap.
Parading the suspect before newsmen at the state police command headquarters yesterday June 27th, the state police Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Kamal, said one Tijjani Mohammed of Sabon Fegi in Lafia, Nasarawa, had on May 12th, reported to the police that Mohammed, his brother, left home for business in Kano but did not return when he was expected to.
Mohammed however called Tijanni to inform him that he had been kidnappped by some unknown persons near Gusau in Zamfara state and that his abductors were demanding a N10 million ransom. Mohammed later called to say the ransom had been reduced to N1 million and that it should be brought to Bauchi.
The police PRO said the state anti-kidnapping squad who were on the trail of the kidnappers, arrested one Haruna Saidu of Gamawa local government area in Bauchi who had come to collect the ransom.
“Investigation revealed that Abdullahi Mohammed, a businessman, after his businesses collapsed, conspired with his friend Haruna Saidu and staged a false kidnapping in order to force his family to pay ransom,” Kamal said.
